Above This log end was replaced due to rot from lack of maintenance. As you can see it is not always necessary to replace the entire log. Many times replacing just the log end is all it takes to remove the problem and protect the rest of the log. Below These pillars were replaced due to extensive rot. The ends were not sealed properly which allowed moisture to absorb into the ends from the top and bottom rotting the pillars from the inside out.
When planning the design of your home overhangs (24" or greater) or covered porches offer much greater protection. Gutters are a must for protection of the logs and finish as well. Vertical logs need to be sealed well on tops and bottoms to prevent moisture from entering rough sawn edges.
