Log Repair
These Log pillars were installed on stone bases. They were not sealed properly on the ends which allowed water to "wick" up causing rot. Over time this can cause whatever they are supporting to sag or even collapse. In this case the deck had already sagged several inches. Wet logs also attract insects causing further damage.
These massive pillars were put in place after the deck was jacked up to its proper height. The tops and bottoms were treated to prevent the water from wicking into the ends again.

Logs that are treated and maintained properly will not need this type of repair. Treat your logs right from the start. In addition to cleaning these logs a borate-based wood preservative was applied before they were stained. It forms a shell of protection to defend against rot, most wood-destroying insects and fungi. PeneTreatTM is a powder that is mixed with water and then applied to bare logs. It is also EPA-approved. will not effect the color of wood, interfere with stain or caulk adhesion, and is completely odorless. Low cost and easy application make PeneTreatTM the popular choice.

This 1950's lake cottage was originally sealed with tar. Cob-blasting and Osborn brushing removed the finish. Log repair was necessary on the bottom log courses in several sections due to water splash-back over the years with a non-breathable finish. Carpenter Ants moved into the wet logs and caused even more damage.
The rotten log sections were cut back and matching log faces were replaced.

This lake cabin was nearly falling apart. Existing logs were cob-blasted and osborn brushed. Rotted logs were replaced and a new sliding glass door and window were installed.
